AOSM BORDER PROTECTION

is a campaign medal established on 22 May 2012 to recognise service by Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel on designated hazardous operations. It may also be awarded to civilians who serve alongside the ADF on designated operations under specific conditions.

The Defence Long Service Medal is an Australian military award given for 15 years of efficient service in the Australian Defence Force (ADF). It was instituted in 1998 and applies to permanent and reserve members regardless of rank. [1, 2, 3]
Qualification and Service
  • Qualifying period: 15 years of remunerated service on or after 14 February 1975.
  • Service types: Combines regular and reserve force service without distinction.
  • Clasps: Awarded for every additional 5 years of efficient service past the initial 15-year requirement. [1, 2, 3]

  • Replaced awards: Superseded the older Defence Force Service Medal (DFSM), Reserve Force Medal (RFM), and Reserve Force Decoration (RFD).

    Australian Defence Medal Miniature – Medals of Service
    The Australian Defence Medal recognizes current and former Australian Defence Force personnel for completing an initial enlistment period or four years of service. It was established on March 20, 2006, and covers qualifying service since September 3, 1945. [1, 2]
    Eligibility
  • Service length: Four years or the completion of an initial fixed enlistment period (whichever is less).
  • Time frame: Efficient service rendered on or after September 3, 1945.
  • Personnel: Includes Regular and Reserve members, plus National Servicemen.
  • Special cases: Can be awarded for death during service or medical discharge due to injury. [1, 2, 3, 4]
    • Design and Ribbon
  • Material: Cupronickel (silver-colored metal).
  • Front (Obverse): Features a stylized Commonwealth Coat of Arms above a wattle sprig.
  • Back (Reverse): Features the words "FOR SERVICE" under the Crown of St Edward, surrounded by wattle.
  • Ribbon: Red with black edges (colors of the Flanders poppy) and white stripes dividing it into three for the three armed services. [1, 2, 3, 4]
