Service Medal (AOSM) is a campaign medal established in 2012 to recognize Australian Defence Force (ADF) members and civilians for service in declared, specific operations. It features a unique ribbon for each operation, such as Border Protection, Greater Middle East, or Special Operations. The medal is silver, featuring a globe and Federation Star.
Key Details of the AOSM:
  • Purpose: Recognizes service in operations not fully covered by the Australian Active Service Medal, replacing the need for new, separate medals for each campaign.
  • Design: A cupro-nickel, antique silver-finished medal.
  • Ribbons/Variants: The medal is awarded with specific ribbons, including:
    • Border Protection: For service in maritime security operations.
    • Greater Middle East Operation: For operations in the Middle East region.
    • Special Operations: For ADF members on specific, declared special operations.
    • Counter Terrorism/Special Recovery (CT/SR): For specialized, high-risk operations.
    • Civilian: Specifically for defence civilians.
    • Indo-Pacific: Recognizes service in the Indo-Pacific region.
    • Africa/UNMISS: For operations in South Sudan (Operation ASLAN).
  • Qualification: Usually requires, for example, 30 continuous or aggregated days of service in a declared operation.
  • Accumulation: An "Accumulated Service Device" is awarded for subsequent deployments to the same operation.
  • Approval: Awarded by the Governor-General on the recommendation of the Chief of the Defence Force. The medal is designed to recognize both ADF members and civilians who contribute to Australia's national interests.
